IHT Allowance

Customer Question

Married couple circa 1943, wife died 1981, the will being written leaving all the estate to the surviving widower. Is the IHT allowance for the wife now carried forward so that in the event of the second death the exception is £650K rather than the £325K Thank you

Hello,

Yes, if the wife's allowance was unused when she passed away in 1981, her threshold may be transferred on the widower's death if and only if the widower passed away after 9 October 2007.

Can I help further?

What is meant by the expression ' if the wife's allowance was unused'?

Expert:  UKSolicitorJA replied 3 years ago.
It would mean that the wife did not make any transfers to other people other than her husband. If she made transfers to other people, her allowance would have been used.
