I turned into a road junction from a lesser road and as I turned

Customer Question

I turned into a road junction from a lesser road and as I turned I realised that the section I had turned into was a small strip of about 2 bus lengths that was restricted to cycles and buses. There was absolutely no advance warning that left turn was restricted and upon entering I had no alternative other than to proceed as to reverse back into a busy road was potentially too dangerous.
I have received a Penalty Charge Notice and £65.00 fine if paid promptly. As I consider there was no prior warning about the left turn being split into two sections it was unfair to penalise drivers who do not know the area. I immediately wrote, first by email and got no response so then sent a letter, also ignored.
I have since revisited the location and can confirm there is no advance warning about the road being divided on the bend whereas drivers on the main road see an advance warning of this divide. Had I ignored a notice I would have accepted the fine but is poor signage a justification to dispute this penalty? Alan W B

Thanks.
That is a proper fine then. They have proper legal basis as opposed to private land fining.
They do have to erect proper signs or road markings to alert a motorists to what should or should not be done.
If this was a no entry zone for cars then there should have been a sign upon entry. If not its fairly unenforceable against you.
Probably the council are saying that there were adequate notices and that is a factual issue ultimately that can be disputed at the Adjudication.
Can I clarify anything for you?

Unlike the straight approach there was not sign erected for drivers turning left as I did. It was only as I turned that I realised that the sharp left was a no go area. A simple sign as on the main road could have avoided this mistake. Do you require photographs?
