I thought my contract with BT for my phone, broadband and television

Resolved Question:

I thought my contract with BT for my phone, broadband and television had come to an end on 7th November 2014. I have been told by BT that I agreed by phone to extend my contract for a further year until 17th of November 2015. I have no recollection of agreeing anything by phone. Is a phone agreement law?

Alex Watts :

Hello my name is ***** ***** I will help you with this.

Alex Watts :

Is it automatic renewal or are they saying you actually made a call to them?

Alex Watts :

Do they have a copy of the email please?

Customer:

No, they phoned me, which I do not recall which enabled them to increase my contract for a futher year.

Customer:

i could phone BT to send the email to me

Customer:

sorry i have to go out in10 mins do i save & exit

Alex Watts : Yes you can save and exit.
Alex Watts : Is it a problem for the next 12 months?
Customer:

I give up you. You have just taken £38 from my bank account just to ask stupid questions. You obviously have not read my email to you properly. I will be phoning the Communications Ombandsman tomorrow to get my money back.

Alex Watts : I am here and can help you.
Alex Watts : I am on the train so it appears I am on and offline
Alex Watts : Can you see my previous replies?
Customer:

Yes I have. What I want to know is whether a valid agreement can be made over the phone.

Alex Watts : Yes it can. A contract can be written or oral.
Alex Watts : This means If you did agree, it is a binding contract.
Alex Watts : You would have 14 days to cancel if you changed your mind.
Alex Watts : I assume Bt did email you, as they have me when I have renewed.
Alex Watts : This is to act as a reminder.
Alex Watts : If that is the case then you are legally tied in for another year.
Alex Watts : But to answer your question - yes contracts can be concluded by phone.
Alex Watts : Can I clarify anything for you about this today please?
Alex Watts : I am sorry if this is not the answer you want and certainly not the one I want to give you, but I have a duty to be honest
Alex Watts : But I would ask you for a copy of the recording of the call - you may remember it when they send it
