British Gas says when you buy a property you automatically

Customer Question

British Gas says when you buy a property you automatically become liable for their gas meter in the property, i.e., as new owner, even if you use no gas, you must pay standing charges from the date of purchase or pay BG to remove the meter. In a recent purchase I made there was nothing in the property purchase contract which mentioned this. Is there an overriding law wich allows BG to enforce this?

Hello my name is ***** ***** I will help you,
For now please let me know whether you had a survey done beforehand please?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
An internal survey was not possible because the building was occupied by squatters. Completion of the deal was conditional on vacant possession but this took place within an hour of the squatters being moved on.

Ok. Sadly British Gas are right, under the Gas Act if there's a meter then they can charge the standing rate, even if it is not used.
Until it's removed you are liable. I am sorry if this is not the answer you want and certainly not the one I want to give you, but I have a duty to be honest.
Can I clarify anything for you about this today please?

Thanks for this. Which is the relevanT section od the Gas Act?
Expert:  Ash replied 1 year ago.
Off the top of my head I can't remember but it's the 1996 act if I recall.

It would be quite helpful if you could point me to the relevant part of the 1996 Act (or the previous Acts). Many thanks
