what happens?

Then , I am afraid, unless the guarantee is under written by an insurer it is worthless.
Guarantees are offered fairly regularly that have no real merit unless the company keeps trading. That is why it is always important to question these offers.
If the firm offered your guarantee and they were limited then it is worthless if they are defunct.
If there is an underwriter which is still trading then you can rely on that.
