This question relates to young people moving into hostels who will sign up to terms of agreement to occupy a room on one day but will move in perhaps week later. Should they be claiming housing benefit from the date they signed up to move in or from the date they actually move in.....does it amount to fraud if they claim in hb before they move in

Hello my name is ***** ***** I will help you.

Why would you claim and be paid benefit when you have not moved in please?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
That is what I thought, but the landlord of the hostel, which is charitable organisation, wants housing benefit to be paid from the date the aggreement was signed which was a week before the date to move in.
Expert:  Ash replied 1 year ago.

No - it HAS to be from the date they move in, otherwise it is ILLEGAL.

It would be FRAUD. It is only payable from WHEN they move in.

Can I clarify anything for you about this today please?

Thank you for your reply Alex.
Would you be able to tell me if there is a particular housing benefit regulation that confirms this please I just want something I can refer to before I take the matter any further... thanks
Expert:  Ash replied 1 year ago.

Benefit is payable either from date you move in or Monday following date of application, whichever is sooner.

That is what the Rules say. Does that clarify? Alex
