If someone has a 5 year visa to the UK issued on the 5th of

Resolved Question:

If someone has a 5 year visa to the UK issued on the 5th of September 2011, ending on the 5th of September 2016, and the visa is class C with multiple entries and duration of stay 180 days; if this person enters on the 31st of August, do they have until the 5th of September 2016 to stay only? Or do they have upto 180 days to stay in the UK? Thank you.

1. I regret to say that the visa is only valid until 5th September, 2016. It is unlawful for the holder to stay beyond this time. Once the person stays beyond this permitted time period they become an overstayer and liable to deportation. Just because the visa might grant a 180 day period of stay does not mean that any stay can be extended beyond the period of the visa which ends on 5th September, 2016.
