Clicking on I forgot.apple.com just takes me to the apple.com page with a list of new products etc
Expert:  Richard replied 3 years ago.
ok, not sure why, but are you able to use this link Andrew?

https://iforgot.apple.com/password/verify/appleid

Customer: replied 3 years ago.

Yes. I've done that but this is what I have been doing

Expert:  Richard replied 3 years ago.
you said you were doing it on the phone Andrew, the instructions I am giving you is to do via the computer.

Can you please?
Customer: replied 3 years ago.

ok. I've done that

Expert:  Richard replied 3 years ago.
ok, and now enter the new password XXXXX the iPhone please Andrew.

Is it now accepted?
Customer: replied 3 years ago.

No. As usual it says this Apple ID has been disabled for security reasons. Tap Reset to reset your account.

This takes ne to Password XXXXX

Expert:  Richard replied 3 years ago.
ok, hold the power and home on the iPhone for about 10 seconds, until you see the Apple Logo.

Release and let the phone restart

Then try to enter it in.

Let me know the results please

Customer: replied 3 years ago.

same result. just to make it clear I am trying to 'update all' apps. Then each of the 32 has a box saying 'update'. I press on the top one and the message 'sign into iTunes Store comes up.

Expert:  Richard replied 3 years ago.
Yes, got that thanks Andrew.

If you go to www.icloud.com

on your computer

Can you sign in there?
Customer: replied 3 years ago.
Yes I'm in
Expert:  Richard replied 3 years ago.
ok, then the account is ok now.

So it is the phone itself.

On the phone, go to Settings, General, Reset, Reset all Settings.

this will not touch your data

After you have done this, then try your password XXXXX

Let me know the results please

Customer: replied 3 years ago.

Expert:  Richard replied 3 years ago.

Customer: replied 3 years ago.

Expert:  Richard replied 3 years ago.
ok, onoce it has loaded, then try to update the apps again.

Let me know the results please

Customer: replied 3 years ago.
Exactly the same. Account disabled
Expert:  Richard replied 3 years ago.
but the App you installed, the new one, that installed correct?
Customer: replied 3 years ago.
Yes. And I've opened it
Expert:  Richard replied 3 years ago.
ok, then it is an issue doing all the updates at once.

Can you go through and update the apps one by one Andrew.

Let me know the results please

Customer: replied 3 years ago.
The same again. A turning circle appears for a few seconds and then i am asked sign in to iTunes Store with my Apple ID password
I am then told the account is disabled for security reasons
Expert:  Richard replied 3 years ago.
uninstall the app your trying to update.

Then install it, does it allow this?
Customer: replied 3 years ago.
Yes. I think you've cracked it but that doesn't explain why I couldn't update. Can I get back to you if I need more help?
Expert:  Richard replied 3 years ago.
yes you can, but the iPhone just got corrupted in its auto update list and the caching of the password.

I have marked this question to never close though Andrew, so at any time, if you have problems, just let me know here.
