Hi,
I am Vinod. I will try my best to help you resolve this issue.
sorry to hear that you are having issues with your ipad. Let's try a reset first. Press and hold the power button and the home button together until you see an apple logo.
If that does not resolve your issue, try a restore. Open itunes in the computer and connect the ipad to the computer. Your ipad name would now be listed to the top right of itunes. Let's click on the ipad name, and now, to the middle of the screen, you will find a "restore ipad" option.
Try the restore. Let me know if you find any difficulty.
Thank You
Vinod

The only button is the power button. There is no 'home'button.

Texhen going into itunes through 'settings' a panel does appear but does not give the 'restore ipad' option. Going in to itunes through the app icon simply gives me a list of itunes and no function possibilities. What next?

The home button is the big round button at the bottom of the screen (the only button on the face of the ipad). If you hold down the power button and the home button together for 10-15 sec, the ipad will turn off and come back on with an apple logo. Let me know if you still have difficulty identifying the home button.
The restore button will be seen only in the computer. You need to download the latest itunes to the computer by going to
www.apple.com/itunes/download
After downloading and installing itunes, open itunes in the computer and connect the ipad to the computer.
Your ipad name would now be listed to the top right of itunes. Let's click on the ipad name, and now, to the middle of the screen, you will find a "restore ipad" option.
Let me know if you find any difficulty.

I have now found both buttons and it seems to work. I am now able to install the latest upgrade which will probably take a while. I will be in touch again when the update is done
