Customer Question

Hi,
I recently bought a second hand 2010 iMac. It had osx mavericks installed, but also had all of the previous owners files still on it. I wiped the hard drive expecting to be able to reinstall mavericks from the disc that came with it, but the computer now won't recognise the disc (it's pretty scratched).
When I start it up, OS X Utilities starts fine and if I click reinstall OS X it starts the procedure but as soon as it asks me to log into my iTunes account I get the same message 'this item is temporarily unavailable - try again later'. I've been trying for days now but can never get any further.
I have never logged on to iTunes on this mac, so my account is not authorised on this computer. Could that be the problem?
Is there any way around it?
It's driving me mad, so any help would be massively appreciated.

Mike the Mac Medic :

You don't use the disk to install Mavericks. You use Recovery HD.

Mike the Mac Medic :

Restart the computer then immediately hold the Command key and the letter R key together until you see the Apple Logo. This will boot to the Recovery HD partition. When it boots you will see a window called Utilities, select the Disk Utility and then select Continue. Then in Disk Utility select Macintosh HD in the left column and then Erase on the right, click on Erase. Quit Disk Utility and Reinstall Mac OS X

Hi Mike,

Mike the Mac Medic :

Hello

JACUSTOMER-zoz119l0- :

I've done that, but for some reason it won't let me reinstall the os x because it says the app store is temporarily unavailable

Mike the Mac Medic :

Are you using WiFi?

JACUSTOMER-zoz119l0- :

yes

Mike the Mac Medic :

Can you connect it direct using Ethernet?

JACUSTOMER-zoz119l0- :

yes, I'll go and do it now

Mike the Mac Medic :

OK let me know

JACUSTOMER-zoz119l0- :

ok its plug in and starting up

Mike the Mac Medic :

Ok

JACUSTOMER-zoz119l0- :

ok I'm in utilities

Mike the Mac Medic :

OK erase and install if it fails again we have to try a different way

JACUSTOMER-zoz119l0- :

On the left I've got '1 TB ST310.......' is that what I need to erase? Underneath it has 'untitled 1'

Mike the Mac Medic :

No untitled you can name it Macintosh HD

JACUSTOMER-zoz119l0- :

I've erased it and tried to reinstall and it just does the same thing.

Mike the Mac Medic :

Ok restart and hold Option until you see a list of boot partitions select Network and try to connect to your WiFI

JACUSTOMER-zoz119l0- :

There's only one option - recovery 10.9.5

Mike the Mac Medic :

Under that you don't see a button for Network?

JACUSTOMER-zoz119l0- :

No there's just an arrow

Mike the Mac Medic :

It should look like this

Mike the Mac Medic :

JACUSTOMER-zoz119l0- :

No, I don't have that. Just one picture of the disk and the arrow underneath.

Mike the Mac Medic :

Ok look at the very top of your screen select each one and tell me what you see.

JACUSTOMER-zoz119l0- :

There's nothing at the top - just a grey screen. And it won't let me select anything other than the arrow

JACUSTOMER-zoz119l0- :

Sorry I haven't got a usb stick large enough to hand

Mike the Mac Medic :

8 GB would work

Mike the Mac Medic :

Ok choose Recovery HD again and now look at the top of your screen

JACUSTOMER-zoz119l0- :

there's nothing at the top of the screen

Mike the Mac Medic :

After you boot to Recovery HD when you see the Utilities window again....

JACUSTOMER-zoz119l0- :

Ok, the top gives me the utilities options on the left and then theres a union jack and network symbol on the right

Mike the Mac Medic :

Ok try Network see if you can sign in to your WiFi.

JACUSTOMER-zoz119l0- :

yes I can sign into wifi fine

Mike the Mac Medic :

OK strange then there may be a problem with your Recovery partition that is why I was going to try the USB stick we could erase both partitions.

Mike the Mac Medic :

Try installing again

JACUSTOMER-zoz119l0- :

It just does the same thing. It tries to access the app store and then says 'this item is temporarily unavailable'

Mike the Mac Medic :

OK sorry I am out of ideas let's see if other experts can help

JACUSTOMER-zoz119l0- :

What do I do now?

JACUSTOMER-zoz119l0- :

I assume I don't have to pay for this?
