There is a slide switch on the top right above the volume buttons Mike, which both mutes and locks the screen.

If you go to Settings > General.
Under Use Side Switch To, what is set there?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.

I get a open padlock and a clockwise arrow

Expert:  Richard replied 2 years ago.
ok, we will have to reset the iPad Mike.
this is going to remove all data, photos ect and return it to new, but we cannot avoid this, so backup any data first.
Then to do the reset, go to Settings, General, Reset and choose Erase all content and reset settings.
Let this complete and when it has, setup the iPad again and tell me please if it now auto rotates.
Let me know the results please
