Thank you for using JustAnswer. I will be glad to assist you.

Whether blood in the semen should be evaluated depends upon the pattern. If it is an isolated or rare occurrence, then it is typically from a small rupture capillary (small blood vessel) and is not worrisome. Therefore, a single episode of blood in the semen, even if more than just a trace of blood, does not need further evaluation.

In men with a greater pattern of blood in the semen, it is most common from conditions that are not serious, in that they are not life threatening, such as an infection of the prostate or urethra. However, there are some less common causes of blood in the semen that would be more serious, such as prostate cancer. Therefore, recurrent or persistent episodes of blood in the semen should be evaluated. If it is from an infection, it would be treated with antibiotics, but the specific treatment would depend upon what is found to be the cause.
