This pain can be from two different possibilities.
The first one is hip joint arthritis.
This can cause pain on climbing stairs.
Another possibility is the pinched nerve like sciatica at the lower back or at the hip joint causing pain while climbing stairs.
Xrays of the hip joint should be considered.
Pinched nerve can be diagnosed clinically.
Physical therapy will be helpful with either problem.
Medication wise, tylenol or ibuprofen should provide relief.
However, you need to discuss with your doctor also for further evaluation and referral to physical therapy.
