I am an ENT specialist and can help in this.

Has she had a CT scan of the nose and sinuses?

Any abnormalities seen by ENT?

The most common causes of such thick mucous in throat are:

Sinus infections.
Chronic pharyngtis,
Acid reflux.
Chronic laryngitis.
Stress related.

She needs a fibre optic examination, this will rule out any pharyngitis and laryngitis.A ct scan will rule out sinus examinations. She also needs treatment for acid reflux.

A significant possibility that remains is that, it is stress related.

Some things which will help are:

Use a logenge like vicks logenge constantly, this will keep your throat moist and cool.
Use warm saline gurgle specially at night before sleep.
Take an iron tonic, available OTC, mild iron deficiencies may also cause this.
Take a probiotic like Nutrolin B capsule 1 cap daily.
Antihistamines - Alavert 10 mg once daily (OTC)

If necessary, she may go for a second opinion to another ENT. Discuss the tests I have suggested like fiberoptic laryngoscopy and CT scan of the sinuses. Possiblity of being related to stress is always there and she should also ask her doctors about anti anxiety medicines.

Hope this shows you the way forward - wish her good health and a quick recovery.

I hope my answer has helped you gain more knowledge and confidence about your problem and in knowing what to discuss with your doctor.
