My mother has a colostomy from a Hartmanns procedure following

Customer Question

My mother has a colostomy from a Hartmanns procedure following an abscess and diverticulitis. This was 6 years ago.She is 88
she does very welland because her vision is impaired uses a two part base and bag. She has a parastomal stoma. She had a scan two years ago because of te stoma but was told all was well, but that a reversal was not advised.
in the last year, when she has had a lot of stress- she gets every few days- a hot burning feeling in her "lump", severe wind, then a significant quite lose movement.
After this she has a "bruised, amost burning feeling" which is debilitating. Her Gp says there is no blockage because everything comes out quite easily. She sometimes talkes a mild laxative. do you have any suggestions please?

Doctor Cameron :

Doctor Cameron :

Doctor Cameron :

JACUSTOMER-50mja9v6- :

no

Doctor Cameron :

what causes her stress

Doctor Cameron :

are you still there?

Doctor Cameron :

when she gets stressed, does she get temporarily constipated?

JACUSTOMER-50mja9v6- :

my dad had dementia and she nursed him, and he died three months ago, and has just moved from her home. She is living with me until her new supported apartment is ready.Everything! She has had some mild anti anxiety and anti depressants from the gp. She eats carefully. But some days even after vbeing careful, this happens

Doctor Cameron :

does she ever get temporarily constipated?

JACUSTOMER-50mja9v6- :

sometimes, yes, but it is usually sorted by apple juice or laxido

Doctor Cameron :

does she take daily prune juice or anything like that?

JACUSTOMER-50mja9v6- :

no

Doctor Cameron :

Well, with stomas, when people have normal changes in BMs, it can cause considerable discomfort, as your mom has been experiencing

Doctor Cameron :

So, she may get intermittently stopped up and then very windy and then it bursts through

JACUSTOMER-50mja9v6- :

Ok what might you suggest

Doctor Cameron :

then it causes discomfort

JACUSTOMER-50mja9v6- :

that sounds right, then she feels horrible

Doctor Cameron :

1. daily prune juice- 1 cup warmed

Doctor Cameron :

2. 1 greek yogurt or 1 cup of kefir a day

JACUSTOMER-50mja9v6- :

yes....

Doctor Cameron :

(yogurt and kefir have probiotics)

JACUSTOMER-50mja9v6- :

ok

JACUSTOMER-50mja9v6- :

anything else

Doctor Cameron :

make sure that she has 7-8 servings of vegetables/fruit a day

Doctor Cameron :

minimize processed meats and cheese and refined sugars

JACUSTOMER-50mja9v6- :

ok, she used to but has avoided this because she is scared it has a dramatic effect- do you think she should try?

Doctor Cameron :

try which one?

JACUSTOMER-50mja9v6- :

to have vegetables and fruit? this is what she has avoided

Doctor Cameron :

start slowly

Doctor Cameron :

you can start with 1/2 c of prune juice and 1/2 c yogurt

JACUSTOMER-50mja9v6- :

ok thank you- anything else?

Doctor Cameron :

add on veggies like cooked carrots, etc..

Doctor Cameron :
