Hi I had a nasal drip which lead to sore throat and mouth.

Resolved Question:

Hi I had a nasal drip which lead to sore throat and mouth. I took 4 amoxicillin that's all I had. Feel much better. I am not sure if anti biotics worked or I would have got better. Saw Dr today and he said take full course but prescribed Augumentin.
My questions if I take augumentin it's different so then why have one anti biotic and then prescribe to finish a course of the other? Surely if I didn't finish amoxicillin then the anti bodies if bacterial would build up against that why am I taking augumentin?

And is it bad to keep taking anti biotics should I not take

Hello
Augmentin is not just amoxicillin, it also has clavalunate, which makes the amoxicillin stronger and less susceptible to bacterial resistance, that is why your doctor prescribe it, since you took too brief a course of amoxicillin and might have crated resistance.

So is it worthwhile take augumentin course or better off not taking the course as anti biotics bad for u
Expert:  DrRussMD replied 3 years ago.
If your doctor thinks this was something like strep, it is better to complete the whole course, for your safety.
Untreated strep of a carrier strep state can cause problems.

He has no idea, said could be bacterial or viral. What is strep
Expert:  DrRussMD replied 3 years ago.
Strep as in strep throat. A bacteria.
So the doctor is covering all bases.

But isn't it bad to take anti biotics all the time. I have taken 3 courses this year am I better off not taking it

You should not take them when you do not need them.

You should have a throat culture before you take antibiotics.

Right now that is not possible because you already took the amoxicillin on your own, so don't do that again.

Work with your doctor, and don't take them in the future without a culture.

Sorry what you mean by throat culture
Expert:  DrRussMD replied 3 years ago.
The doctor swabs your throat and they send it to the lab, and the lab identifies if you have strep or other bacteria that needs to be treated.

Nope nothing like that. He thinks throat and tongue being sore from post nasal drip. He never even looked into mouth
Expert:  DrRussMD replied 3 years ago.
I am not going to second guess your doctors prescription, and I am not going to tell you to go against your doctors prescription. WE do not substitute for your doctor on this site.

Right now, as I already said, a culture would do no good, since you already started the antibiotics. So your doctor is being cautious.

I have already stated...you should not do this next time unless you have a swab test..because most times infections are viral.

I hope this clears up the confusion.

So
A. Do what your doctor says.
B. Don't take antibiotics on your own.
C. Make sure you have a throat culture in the future before you go on antibiotics for your throat.

OK. If you have further questions or details, use reply to expert.

If I don't take anti biotics what's the worst case
Scenario
Expert:  DrRussMD replied 3 years ago.
Untreated strep can result in heart problems for life, kidney problems, bone infection, and skin disease.
