Customer Question

Hi I have been having stomach probs for over 2yrs now. It started.when I was stressed about something and lasted a week, it then went away for 3 wks then came back again after I had been off my antidepressants for a while. I had symptoms where my stomach would feel just not right and I would feel like vomiting without nausea but I had a few bad days where I would feel nauseous but it would only last about 45 mins. I then had a really bad spell of ibs which I had never suffered previously. I couldn't eat for 3 days. Then my stepdaughter came to live with us and all my symptoms disappeared for about 5 mths but returned again and was bad for a few days then improved a bit but has still been there ever since. I have recently came off my antidepressants again cus I am pregnant with my fourth child and the symptoms have gone worse again. I am convinced I have gastroparesis. I have a sore feeling in my stomach when I wake in the morning and I have constant flatulence. Sometimes my stomach feel unsettled or nauseous straight after eating but sometimes 3 hrs after eating. I get this feeling that food is making my stomach uncomfortable like the feeling you get after a big greasy meal but I barely feel bloated and unless the nausea gets bad I still manage to eat good size meals. I have put on half stone in weight just lately. I have not lost weight with this. I had a normal result on my endoscopy although when I had it done my symptoms had improved.

Dr. David :

This is Dr. David

Dr. David :

increased stress will cause excessive stomach acid production which can inflame the stomach and cause gastritis.

Dr. David :

bad gastritis can cause nausea and stomach pains and tenderness when you eat.

Dr. David :

have you tried an antacids like maalox or mylanta ?

Dr. David :

pregnancy can also cause nausea as well.

JACUSTOMER-ns4swu8a- : I have tried all the opus and they havent made any difference. I suffer from anxiety, ocd and emetophobia. Does it not sound like gastroparesis?
JACUSTOMER-ns4swu8a- : I was meant to say ppis
Dr. David :

sounds more like excessive anxiety and excessive stomach acid and possibly nausea from pregnancy.

Dr. David :

gastroparesis tends to be seen in patients who have nerve damage like in patients who have diabetes.

Dr. David :

and in older patients

JACUSTOMER-ns4swu8a- : I've had even before I was pregnant
Dr. David :

gastroparesis is hard to test for when you are pregnant.

Dr. David :

you will need a xray fluoro stomach emptying procedure to time the time it takes for your stomach to empty contrast.

JACUSTOMER-ns4swu8a- : What do I do of the meds are not helping? I don't get burning or heartburn
Dr. David :

if the stomach is slow to empty contrast, then you might have gastroparesis.

Dr. David :

ginger can help with nausea.

Dr. David :

have you talked to your doctor about your symptoms?

JACUSTOMER-ns4swu8a- : Is that likely to be the cause?
Dr. David :

most likely anxiety and pregnancy are the cause of your symptoms.

Dr. David :

which can cause nausea, upset stomach,

Dr. David :

type symptoms.

Dr. David :

hello?

JACUSTOMER-ns4swu8a- : My doctor says its anxiety too bit I'm not convinced that it can affect my stomach to this extent. What is the anxiety doing to my stomach to make me feel like this. On one occasion I had symptoms waking me in the night bit normally my tummy is perfect at night
Dr. David :

anxiety causes your body to make excessive adrenaline and catacholamines in your system.

Dr. David :

these hormones can cause your stomach to become like a nervous stomach, to spasm and contract

Dr. David :

and this can lead you to feel nauseous, nervous, upset stomach

Dr. David :

sometimes anxiety can be so bad, you can have panic attacks.

JACUSTOMER-ns4swu8a- : When my symptoms are mild I will get them any time of the day but when they are bad they hit at a particular time of day and I feel great relief after like as if its reached its peak and has to give up for a bit
JACUSTOMER-ns4swu8a- : I have always suffered severe anxiety which has made me feel like im dying
Dr. David :

I am sorry you are battling this.

JACUSTOMER-ns4swu8a- : The emetophobia doesn't help
Dr. David :

sounds like you have battled severe anxiety for a long time.

Dr. David :

and it is hard when you are pregnant since you can't take many of the medications to help with anxiety.

Dr. David :

have you talked to a psychotherapist about these anxiety attacks?

Dr. David :

sometimes counseling or psychotherapy or cognitive behavioral therapy might help .

JACUSTOMER-ns4swu8a- : If the symptoms are severe I get convinced I have gastroparesis but when the symptoms are mild or just starting I can get rid of them by finding something elsevto worry about. I can also feel the symptoms brewing. I always know before hand if I am going to have probs after eating or if its going to hit at a certain time of day about 24hrs before it kicks in.
JACUSTOMER-ns4swu8a- : I'm on a waiting list for psychotherapy
Dr. David :

I see.

Dr. David :

I hope you get some psychotherapy soon.

Dr. David :

sounds like you are already using techniques of psychotherapy if you are able to divert your attention and worry to something else to be able to minimize your symptoms.

Dr. David :

sounds like you have already learned techniques to try to manage your anxiety symptoms.

JACUSTOMER-ns4swu8a- : Its not so much a technique, I just get other things worrying me related to my anxiety sometimes and it shifts my attention.
Dr. David :

I see

Dr. David :

it sounds like you are trying to control your anxiety symptoms which is good.

JACUSTOMER-ns4swu8a- : So these symptomscan be caused by anxiety? What about the feeling where I feel like vomiting without nausea. Can that be anxiety. Sometimes my stomach can feel so upset that I feel like vomiting to get rid of the feeling bit i never have vomited with it
JACUSTOMER-ns4swu8a- : It never makes any difference what I eat or how much I eat
JACUSTOMER-ns4swu8a- : Sometimes eating triggers it. Is that normal?
Dr. David :

yes, these symptoms are caused by anxiety.

Dr. David :

anxiety can cause your stomach to feel this way.

Dr. David :

eating can trigger it as well.
