Customer Question

Dear Doctor,

i am away from home and is unable to find an early appointment to see a doctor. I have a few spots all over my body. I thought they were chicken pox but a pharmacist told me they are not. The spots are red and filled with fluid when they appear. Almost instantly they pop leaving the head a darken color. I have two swollen glands to the back of my head and either side of my neck. Within the last hour my throat became sore. I went to the pharmacist but since I did not have a doctor's prescription she was unable to meet my request for antibiotics. I am concerned because I have my two year old son with me who is a leukemia patient. I am afraid that whatever it is may be contagious and harmful to him. My condition began sunday evening but seem to get worse with each passing day. The buttons are to my head, face, chest, back. two in the groin area and 3 on my thigh area. Any word, medical advice is most welcome

Mysticdoc :

Hi there,

I am Mysticdoc, experienced Internal Medicine Specialist.

I am here to help you with your concerns.

Mysticdoc :

Based on your description, it seems like chicken pox.

Mysticdoc :

the chicken pox lesions are like fluid filled blisters and can be itchy.

Mysticdoc :

this can cause sore throat and swollen glands commonly.

Mysticdoc :

This is a viral infection

Mysticdoc :

Hence, antibiotic will not help.

Mysticdoc :

This can be contagious--hence, contact with your son should be avoided till the blisters crust off completely usually 10 -14 days

Mysticdoc :

the rash resolves on its own.

JACUSTOMER-av34fo4o- :

I am not itchy. The pharmacist I saw today said it is not chicken pox. If it were, from sunday to today the spots/buttons/fluid filled blisters would have been more. I have no more than 30 of these on my body

Mysticdoc :

can you post a picture here?

JACUSTOMER-av34fo4o- :

hold while i try this

Mysticdoc :

ok

Mysticdoc :

are these blisters painful?

JACUSTOMER-av34fo4o- :

not really. I feel a little tingly in the ones to my head and the back of my ear. I do not really have the urge to itch

JACUSTOMER-av34fo4o- :

hello

Mysticdoc :

ok

JACUSTOMER-av34fo4o- :

Mysticdoc :

Thanks for the picture.

Mysticdoc :

This is very helpful.

Mysticdoc :

this is likely a skin bacterial infection.

Mysticdoc :

staphylococcus infection.

Mysticdoc :

staphylococcus is a bacteria that resides on the skin commonly.

Mysticdoc :

but sometime this can cause infection.

Mysticdoc :

This is also known a impetigo in medical parlance.

Mysticdoc :

Topical antibiotic ointment like Mupirocin should be helpful.

Mysticdoc :

oral antibiotic like cephalexin or amoxicillin may be used as well.

Mysticdoc :

It is contagious and better to avoid any skin contact with your son.

Mysticdoc :

This should resolve within a week with antibiotic.

Mysticdoc :

Best wishes,

Hi--I'd have a second opinion here. These don't resemble any infection--staph or otherwise. They look like benign sebaceous cysts--clogged oil glands. While tretinoin cream might help with them, if they are bothersome your doctor can open up the top of them and drain them but you don't need antibiotics for this.
