Customer Question

Good Morning. I am a 63 year old female, 5'4, 9st and generally very healthy apart from chronic constipation for years. In the last few months I have woken every morning with a badly bloated stomach, which improves somewhat during the day. for the last 10 days I've had cystitis which is getting better but I have suddenly developed a fever and a "stitchlike" pain in my right side on a level with the navel. This started yesterday but has not got worse. Am concerned I might have a bowel blockage as my constipation is quite bad. Would appreciate your advice. Thankyou.

Dr. Cameron :

hello

Dr. Cameron :

welcome to the chat

Dr. Cameron :

have you had any previous abdominal surgeries?

Dr. Cameron :

Any vomitinhg?

Dr. Cameron :

* vomiting?

Dr. Cameron :

when was your last bowel movement?

Dr. Cameron :

any other medical problems or medications?

Dr. Cameron :

When was your last colonoscopy?

JACUSTOMER-3dprzv9u- :

Hi-no abdominal surgery, no vomiting .

Dr. Cameron :

Take your time answering my questions :-)

Dr. Cameron :

I will BRB in a couple of mins- getting a drink off stove

JACUSTOMER-3dprzv9u- :

My last "decent" bowel movement was about 5 days ago

JACUSTOMER-3dprzv9u- :

I had a colonoscopy 10 years ago which was clear.

JACUSTOMER-3dprzv9u- :

I am on 1mg HRT and 20mg citalopram which I take every 2 days as I am weaning myself off them

Dr. Cameron :

back

Dr. Cameron :

what have you taken for constipation?

Dr. Cameron :

any changes in diet?

JACUSTOMER-3dprzv9u- :

I don't tend to take anything for constipation unless I am desperate as it only works for a day-usually stuff from a health shop-like colon cleanse. no diet changes I eat quite healthily.

Dr. Cameron :

tell me what you eat

JACUSTOMER-3dprzv9u- :

Breakfast - toast or muesli/blueberries or banana, Lunch - pitta bread n cheese, tea couple of biscuits, dinner salmon plus veg or quiche/baked beans/tuna sandwich/risotto/pasta n veg - that kind of thing.

Dr. Cameron :

ok

Dr. Cameron :

your last bm was 5 days ago reight?

Dr. Cameron :

but you are passing gas..?

JACUSTOMER-3dprzv9u- :

Yes but pretty inconsequential and many days before that the previous one. Otherwise just a few "rabbit droppings" in the day

Dr. Cameron :

ok

JACUSTOMER-3dprzv9u- :

lots of wind and gas always

Dr. Cameron :

well, it does not sound like you are obstructed- because you would not be passing any wind and you would be vomiting

Dr. Cameron :

that being said, I am more concerned about the worsening of your constipation

Dr. Cameron :

your colonoscopy is stale- so you need to have another one

JACUSTOMER-3dprzv9u- :

ok will do that.

Dr. Cameron :

at any rate, you can also practice a good bowel regimen

Dr. Cameron :

the more constipated you are , the more difficult it is to move your bowels-

Dr. Cameron :

because there is less surface tension forces- think of it like a balloon

Dr. Cameron :

hard to blow up in the beginning, but easier in the end

Dr. Cameron :

have you been tested for thyroid disease? because that can make constipation worse

JACUSTOMER-3dprzv9u- :

No

Dr. Cameron :

I woudl recommend that

JACUSTOMER-3dprzv9u- :

ok will do thanks very much for your help

Dr. Cameron :

make sure you are eating at least 6 servings of veggies

Dr. Cameron :

you can add wheat or oat bran

Dr. Cameron :

metamucil

Dr. Cameron :

as well, avoid stimulant laxatives- because they make things worse in the long run

Dr. Cameron :

you can use milk of magnesia to move things along- it is a saline laxative

Dr. Cameron :

Just as an FYI, here is a very strong bowel regimen used in chronic narcotic use (like for cancer patients)

Dr. Cameron :

so you can see what people sometimes need to do:

Dr. Cameron :

Dr. Cameron :

But the important thing for you is to repeat the colonoscopy and get your thyroid checked

JACUSTOMER-3dprzv9u- :

Ok. Thankyou for your advice-very helpful

Dr. Cameron :

you are welcome! thanks for the rating :-)
