I was recently put on propranolol 40mg for physical symptoms

Customer Question

I was recently put on propranolol 40mg for physical symptoms of anxiety. The propranolol worked so well in stopping my palpitations and breathlessness. However it made my asthma worse so my doctor took me off it straight away. My question is is there any other drug that blocks adrenaline or stops adrenaline being produced because it is definitely adrenaline that causes my most troubling symptoms thank you

Hi there,

I am Mysticdoc, experienced Internal Medicine Specialist.

I am here to help you with your concerns.

Mysticdoc :

Adrenaline is part of sympathetic nervous system.

Mysticdoc :

Propranolol blocks the adrenergic receptors thereby reducing adrenaline action.

Mysticdoc :

Unfortunately this can also worsen asthma symptoms.

Mysticdoc :

However, beta1 selective blockers like metoprolol can be used at low doses 25 mg daily ( long acting).

Mysticdoc :

The risk of asthma exacerbation is much less with metoprolol.

Mysticdoc :

So you can discuss with your doctor.

Mysticdoc :

If metoprolol also affects your breathing, then there is no other medication that blocks adrenaline activity without affecting breathing.

JACUSTOMER-db2kcm9e- : Ok thanks. Will the beta 1 blockers affect my anxiety breathing because when I get adrenaline my breathing rate increases and that is one of the worst problems?
Mysticdoc :

Yes metoprolol will help with the anxiety related symptoms as well.
