I had an hba1c test done as I was worried about diabetes and

Customer Question

I had an hba1c test done as I was worried about diabetes and it came back normal (32 mmol/l). However, I have read that the test is not reliable in pregnancy and I was 6 weeks' pregnant at the time. Is it reliable enough in early pregnancy to be confident I am not diabetic?

Dr.Amita :

Hello

Customer:

hi

Dr.Amita :

Studies have shown that the HbA1c levels in early pregnancy are lower when compared to non pregnant women

Customer:

Even at 6 weeks?

Dr.Amita :

Yes even at 6 weeks though the effect may be less

Customer:

So can I not rely on the result?

Dr.Amita :

Main thing to consider here is that your levels are well below the acceptable range

Dr.Amita :

and you can rely on the test

Customer:

I also did tests on home glucose monitor and levels were normal

Customer:

Can I be confident I am okay?

Dr.Amita :

Yes you can be confident that you are okay.

Customer:

I got a fasting glucose at the doctor of 5.5 mmol/l (99)

Customer:

Which I know is borderline

Customer:

So I was worried

Dr.Amita :

That is normal

Customer:

But I think it was because I was scared at the doctor and it increased by blood sugar, as my level at home was 4.2mmol

Customer:

I presume blood glucose meters for home use are reliable enough?

Customer:

Well, I know 5.5 is normal, but from 5.6 is prediabetes

Customer:

I didn't like being on the edge

Dr.Amita :

Yes stress can cause the blood sugar levels to rise

Dr.Amita :

I would suggest that you do not get unduly worried about this.Nothing suggests that you have diabetes

Customer:

Thank you.

Customer:

I got started on this because I had oral thrush

Customer:

I wondered if diabetes caused it

Dr.Amita :

Oral thrush can occur without diabetes.

Dr.Amita :

You have had tests for diabetes and these do not say that you have diabetes

Customer:

Even with the pregnancy lowering the result, you think it's okay because it's well below 42 or 48 mmol?

Dr.Amita :

At 6 weeks the lowering effect of pregnancy would be minimal and your results are very much within normal range and that is why I am saying that you need not get unduly worried

Customer:

Okay
