Hello, I am a 25 year old healthy male, in decent physical

Resolved Question:

Hello,

I am a 25 year old healthy male, in decent physical condition.

I have been drinking energy drinks or consuming caffeine every single day (minus a few months when i tried to quit) since i was 17. The range of consumption has ranged from 50mg-500mg a day. I would say on average for the last year i have been consuming 250mg per day.

I am a very self motivated person, and i have found that without having caffeine i can literally not concentrate on my work (I work on the PC). I am self employed so my income is derived 100% from my own personal efforts.

I have managed to quit for a period of as much as 2 months. I go through the usual withdrawal symptoms (which are pretty bad) but once i am out the other side, i feel okay. I noticed anxiety levels go down and i am a lot more happy/less stressed feeling.

HOWEVER, when i do this, i can literally not concentrate on anything for more than 10-15 minutes, get distracted and procrastinate.

Diet and exercise are quite likely not the problem. I go to the gym 3-4 times a week, eat a good paleo diet, and have under 12% body fat percentage.

Motivation is not an issue because i want to work really hard. However, without this i cannot concentrate or focus.

My questions are as follows:

1) After doing some research - i have a feel i may have ADHD or some attention issues. Is this possible based on my description?

2) If so how do i go about treating it (I am from the UK)?

3) I consume caffeine mostly in sugar free energy drinks, often with taurine and added vitamins - b3, b5, b6, b12. Is this likely to cause me any long term health problems/potential liver damage or anything like this?

4) I have noticed i have had regular chest pains for the last week - on and off. I think it is acid reflux, my resting heart rate when i wake up is roughly 60 beats per minute. Also when laying down i have noticed acid rise up my throat. On occassions i get heart palpitations also. Is this something that needs to be checked?

5) Finally - What is the best course of action for me? My overall goal is good physical and mental health.

Kindest regards,

- Andrew

caffeine is a stimulant and stimulants are used to treat ADHD

Dr. David :

there are better medical treatments for ADHD than caffeine.

Dr. David :

but you have to see a doctor about them

Dr. David :

medications like ritalin or adderall

Customer:

Thank your Dr David, i was well aware of that already.

Customer:

What is the best cause of action to increase mental ability/concentration and overall health and well being?

Dr. David :

by drinking all of the caffeine, this can cause your heart to be beating faster.

Customer:

right

Dr. David :

your best bet is to see a doctor and get your ADHD diagnosed properly and treated properly.

Dr. David :

that will help your overall concentation.

Dr. David :

you are not properly treating your ADHD with caffeine

Dr. David :

which is too short acting and not a good long term mediation for ADHD.

are you willing to see a doctor?

Customer:

Maybe. I have been to a doctor only a couple of times in my life.

Customer:

do you know if energy drinks can cause liver damage?
