I have recently experienced discomfort when first swallowing

Customer Question

I have recently experienced discomfort when first swallowing food - usually at breakfast time. It does pass but at the time it is very uncomfortable, as if there is something lodged in my throat and then a pain as the food is swallowed.

Dr. Tharun :

Hello

Dr. Tharun :

Do you have cough or fever along with it ?

Dr. Tharun :

Do you smoke ?

JACUSTOMER-c1wf9chi- :

I have a cough but I don't smoke. I have recently had a cold after returning to the UK from abroad

Dr. Tharun :

Any abdominal pain , nausea or vomiting ?

Dr. Tharun :

History of acid reflux ?

JACUSTOMER-c1wf9chi- :

No abdominal pain or nausea and vomiting but I do have acid reflux

Dr. Tharun :

This could be either an after effect of the cold you had or aggravation of the acid reflux.

Dr. Tharun :

Both conditions can cause inflammation of the throat and pharynx and cause pain while swallowing.

Dr. Tharun :

Do you take anything for the reflux ?

JACUSTOMER-c1wf9chi- :

I do feel chesty so it may be cold related. No, I don't take anything in particular when I get the reflux.

Dr. Tharun :

If it is the cold then it should resolve with time. You can take some painkillers like paracetamol to reduce the throat pain. You can also add omeprazole for the acidity.

Dr. Tharun :

Do some warm gargles.

Dr. Tharun :

Take soft diet and more of liquids till this settles down.

Dr. Tharun :

If the discomfort persists you should see your doctor for a prescription of antibiotics.

JACUSTOMER-c1wf9chi- :

Thank you, doctor, I will follow your advice.

Dr. Tharun :

Welcome and take care.
