Ask a Doctor and Get an Answer to Your Medical Question ASAP
This is Dr. David
I am sorry you are having hot flashes.
sorry that the black cohash did not help.
you can talk to your doctor about trying medications like effexor or paxil which can help decrease your hot flash symptoms.
these medications are antidepressants but have been proven in trials to work to decrease symptoms of hot flashes from menopause
I would talk to your doctor about their effexor 37.5mg once or twice a day
or paxil to help with your hot flash symptoms.
let me know if you have other questions.
Thanks - I will give it a try at GPs - is it available to buy privately in case GP will not prescribe? I find it incredible that I am still having symptoms at my age. Is there any idea on how long this is going to last - I did manage to stop HRT for 18 months once but nothing changed and I ended up getting Premarin again.
it is rare to have these hot flashes at your age, but it can happen.
it sounds like you have a bad case of it.
hopefully with effexor or paxil your symptoms will get better.
there are studies of these medications.
bring in a copy of this study to your doctor.
there are others like it on the internet.
Venlafaxine is effexor.
your GP should prescribe it.
if they don't, ask to see a specialist like a gyn doctor
effexor is also used in breast cancer patients who develop hot flashes from their breast cancer therapy.
I have just remembered, a short while ago I was started on Citalopram but these gave me quite severe headaches every morning so again GP stopped them. I will give what you recommend a try.
