Hello. My daughter who is 7 in October has recently been complaining

Resolved Question:

Hello. My daughter who is 7 in October has recently been complaining of belly aches nausea headaches lethargy and not wanting to eat alot of the time.
Her stools look normal no mucus or blood and no diarrhea or constipation. I took her to the doctor who said she's also underweight. They did blood tests which have shown a mild elevation in ggt? Liver related. The suggestion is that its due to medication but sascha hasnt had medication of any sort for ages.
What does this mean and what could it be?
Sascha has a family history on her biological fathers side if ulcerative colitis... does this mean anything? All other mmarkers came back normal except still waiting on a screening panel for coeliac disease to come back. Please give me your opinion or advice. Regards

Dr. Shahzad MD :

Hi there. Thank you for your question. I will be helping you out with your queries

Dr. Shahzad MD :

What is the level of her GGT?

Dr. Shahzad MD :

What is her hemoglobin like?

Dr. Shahzad MD :

Do you have the results with you?

Customer:

I just tried copying results can you see them?

Dr. Shahzad MD :

no

Customer:

Her haemaglobin is 122

Dr. Shahzad MD :

ok

Dr. Shahzad MD :

level of GGT?

Customer:

Her ggt is just on 20

Dr. Shahzad MD :

what is the normal lab range for this?

Customer:

> 20

Customer:

It says mildly elevated but I feel that in the absence of any drug to explain the elevation further investigation should be done?

Dr. Shahzad MD :

what medication was she on which they think has caused this to happen?

Customer:

Nothing. Shes never been on anything. She has panadol or nurofen or pain stop when Ill and has had anti biotics for various things. Last anti biotic was about 6 months ago for an ear infection

Dr. Shahzad MD :

Yes I think that is the reason why they are doing the coeliac panel i.e. for her symptoms.

Dr. Shahzad MD :

Panadol can sometimes cause a rise in liver enzymes.

Dr. Shahzad MD :

But a level of 20 is not something that I would worry about too much.

Dr. Shahzad MD :

Ulcerative colitis in the family also has nothing to do with this.

Customer:

Would coeliac disease cause raised ggt

Dr. Shahzad MD :

Yes it can.

Customer:

What does a raised ggt actually mean and is it a good sign that all other markers are within normal range?

Customer:

Is coeliac disease serious

Dr. Shahzad MD :

It does not mean a great deal but you have to fit all the pieces of the puzzle together. Its just a clue to a large number of conditions that can cause a raised level but other things need to be looked at particularly other liver enzymes.

Dr. Shahzad MD :

Normal liver enzymes other than GGT is really good and reassuring.

Customer:

They said its an isolated elevation so im guessing all other liver enzymes are ok

Dr. Shahzad MD :

Celiac disease is a condition where the patient has sensitivity or a kind of allergy to a protein that is found in large variety of food stuff i.e. glutein.

Dr. Shahzad MD :

If celiac disease is diagnosed she would have to stay on a special diet i.e. gluten free diet.

Customer:

Ok thanks

Dr. Shahzad MD :

You are most welcome.

Dr. Shahzad MD :

Any more questions?

Customer:

Ok thNks ill have to look it up
