My 71 year old mother had surgery to remove a tumour from her

Customer Question

My 71 year old mother had surgery to remove a tumour from her sigmoid colon two weeks ago. She didnt need a stoma and had normal bowel function initially but has now become constipated. She is worried and uncomfortable and unsure of what laxatives, if any, will be safe for her to use. Please can you advise?

Dr. David :

This is Dr. David

Dr. David :

she needs to call up her surgeons and let them know she is constipated.

Dr. David :

she needs to start with mild stool softeners first like eating prunes and using colace (docusate sodium)

Dr. David :

I would start with that.

Dr. David :

if that doesn't work, then move towards laxatives.

Customer:

Will I be able to get colace from a general pharmacy or is it only available on prescription?

Dr. David :

you can get colace or docusate sodium at the pharmacy as a stool softener.

Dr. David :

this can be gentle and can help soften the stool to allow BM to be easier.

Dr. David :

best of luck to you and your mother.

Dr. David :

do have her talk to her surgeon as well

Dr. David :

let me know if you have other questions.

Customer:

Thats great x thank you

Dr. David :

you are welcome
