Hi, I am 33 years old and have got juvenile myoclonic epilepsy.

Customer Question

Hi, I am 33 years old and have got juvenile myoclonic epilepsy. I have had it since I was 18, but it has been very controlled, and I haven't have many seizers.
I have to kids, age 6 and 2. Since my second kid my epilepsy has gone worse. I have been seeing a neurologist since a year, they have changed my medication. But it has make it worse, and I have started to get seizers on weekly basis. I am very scared and also quite depressed. I know my kids sees me, and the older one has started behaving a bit different, he also told me he is scared because the monster comes in mummy...
Don't know how to explain him. The epilepsy nurse is finally sending me to EEG, after I have pushed them a lot...
I'm scared, I want scan of my head... I've also heard in different countries they have hospitals for epilepsy patient, and they admit people inn that are struggling.
What can I do? Is there any way I can go for help?
Is there a chance for me to ever get well??
This is the medication I am taking:
Keppra levetiracetam 1000 mg in morning, and 1500 mg at night.
Also at night I take clonazepam 0.5 mg + lamotrigine 50 mg

Will wait for your reply, thanks.

Dr. David :

This is Dr. David

Dr. David :

you should get a scan of your brain

Dr. David :

if your old medications were controlling your seizures better, you might need to go back on your old medications.

Dr. David :

what were you on before keppra?

Customer: Tegretol prolonged release, can't remember how much I took
Dr. David :

then that might be a better seizure medication for you.

Dr. David :

Tegretol XR carbamazepine.

Dr. David :

probably 600 or 800mg twice a day or something.

Customer: the neurologist changed it because I was having seizers at least 1/2 times in 3 months...
Dr. David :

well, now it is worse,

Dr. David :

once a week.

Dr. David :

I would go back to the neurologist and ask to be changed back.

Dr. David :

when is your next appointment with the neurologist?

Customer: It's in May, I think 27th
Dr. David :

I would work on trying to get a sooner appointment than that.

Dr. David :

since you are having seizures every week.

Dr. David :

you need to go back on your tegretol XR and get a scan of your brain and an EEG

Customer: Ok, but how do I ask for a scan?
Customer: Don't think neurologist will give me, I've asked before
Dr. David :

get the EEG first

Dr. David :

tell the neurologist you are having seizures weekly

Dr. David :

ask first to go back on your tegretol.

Dr. David :

if your seizures are still bad, then ask for a scan.

Customer: Ok
Dr. David :

best of luck to you

Dr. David :

try your best to get a sooner appointment.

Dr. David :

I hope you get your seizures under better control
