2 days ago my nan who is 79 years old suffered a cardiac arrest,

Customer Question

2 days ago my nan who is 79 years old suffered a cardiac arrest, of which they resuscitated her and brought her back. Since then, she was expected only to live till the early hours of the morning, but is still alive now. I am not confident that the doctors are doing everything they can for her. She has been on oxygen ever since, which has now been put down to half. The doctors have told us that she has acute emphysema, which we cannot understand as she has never smoked. We are also worried that she may have brain damage as she is not sedated anymore but is still not able to talk and can only open her eyes for a little while but doesn't seem to have any life in her. The doctors have said she has not had a stroke. They have also said that they do not want to resuscitate her again if she has another cardiac arrest.
Your reply will be much appreciated as i am worried with the hospital she is in not having a good reputation that she is getting the best care. Thankyou.

Dr. David :

This is Dr. David

Dr. David :

I am sorry about your nan.

Dr. David :

if she had some damage to her heart during the cardiac arrest, she could be having excessive fluid back up in her lungs.

Dr. David :

and this can look like emphysema on chest xray.

Dr. David :

I hope she wakes up soon.

Dr. David :

I agree with not trying to do resuscitation again a second time which would probably be too much for her.

Dr. David :

hello?

Customer:

she already suffers from a weak heart,

Dr. David :

I see.

Dr. David :

so this cardiac arrest was very serious on her already weak heart.

Dr. David :

so she could be having congestive heart failure where fluid backs up in the lungs and can cause swellling in the legs.

Dr. David :

I'm sure she is on lasix diuretic to try to get rid of excessive fluid from her body.

Dr. David :

hello?

Customer:

her legs are not swollen, they keep checking for that, i will ask if she is on that.

Dr. David :

I hope she is comfortable and not in pain.

Dr. David :

I'm sure her doctors are doing all they can to help keep her blood pressures up if her heart is weak.

Customer:

I cannot understand how she has developed this emphysema as she has never smoked

Customer:

and how it has not been picked up befor

Dr. David :

as I said, she could be having fluid back up in her heart from a weak heart.

Dr. David :

this is called congestive heart failure and can look like emphysema on chest xray when it is not emphysema

Dr. David :

but just excessive fluid in the lungs.

Customer:

right i see, and what are the odds on her surviving if she has this?

Dr. David :

it is really hard to know

Dr. David :

it depends on how much of her heart was damaged and how much is functioning now.

Dr. David :

it might be hard to tell at this point how much heart muscle is working.

Dr. David :

she might be able to have a cardiac echocardiogram to see how much of her heart is working

Dr. David :

and what her ejection fraction might be.

Dr. David :

I bet her ejection fraction is quite low. that is the fraction of blood in her heart which is ejected with each heart beat.

Customer:

her breathing does not seem to bad, it is just her level of consciousness that is worrying. They say that they cannot see if there would be any brain damage for another 3-5 days

Customer:

as it will not show us on a scan

Dr. David :

it will on an MRI scan of the brain.

Dr. David :

has she had an MRI scan of the brain.

Dr. David :

this is more detailed than a CT scan of the brain.

Customer:

she has had a ct scan

Customer:

there is not sign of a stroke either

Dr. David :

that is good.

Dr. David :

I hope she wakes up soon

Dr. David :

best of luck to you and her
