for many years,I am breathless and weak with heart palpitation

Resolved Question:

for many years,I am breathless and weak with heart palpitation a few days before and during my period. I have had several tests particularly anemia which always come back clear every time. Since I am 53 now, Im hoping all this will stop along with my periods. I recently bought a home blood pressure moniter as it has sometimes verged on the low side over the years. yesterday the breathless symptoms started and my bp was 123 over 70. Today my period has begun and my symptoms are worse. My bp today is 121 over 60, is there a connection? Also is this a low bp reading. Thankyou so much for reading this Fiona

Dr. Thomas, MD :

hello

Dr. Thomas, MD :

Your blood pressure is fine.

Dr. Thomas, MD :

Can you respond in chat?

Customer:

oh good yes.

Dr. Thomas, MD :

What I would do is an EKG and maybe a 24 hour holter monitor.

Dr. Thomas, MD :

Palpitations are usually PVCs which are harmless

Dr. Thomas, MD :

But you should be tested.

Dr. Thomas, MD :

I would also check magnesium levels and if under 2.5 would supplement.

Dr. Thomas, MD :

This is often an undiagnosed relative deficiency.

Dr. Thomas, MD :

Lack of magnesium can contribute to palpitations, anxiety and other problems.

Customer:

ok thankyou will do that. What would explain the out of breath just climbing the stairs on around this tome of month. Im quite fit swim and walk lots regularly but always have to stop at this time with the slightest effort.

Dr. Thomas, MD :

Bronchospasm...like asthma, GERD/acid reflux which can go undiagnosed, cardiac rhythm problem which needs to be ruled out. Discuss all of these with your doctor.

Customer:

but Im absoloutely fine once my period has stopped.

Customer:

my chest is clear too and don't smoke.

Dr. Thomas, MD :

Anxiety related to the period, palpitations during the period, hormone changes affecting underlying GERD or bronchospasm...all should be ruled out...it does not sound like you have had a great work up

Customer:

its like there is no energy in my chest, but not gasping for breath.

Dr. Thomas, MD :

Same answer.

Dr. Thomas, MD :

You can even have very mild bronchospasm.

Dr. Thomas, MD :

Palpitations can give this

Dr. Thomas, MD :

Mitral valve prolapse

Dr. Thomas, MD :

Take in all of these terms to your doc.

Dr. Thomas, MD :

make them rule them out

Customer:

ok thanks. Just strange that Im absoloutely fine at all other times, except period times. I go regularly to the gym too.

Dr. Thomas, MD :

This implies that it is a hormonal effect, but that can aggravate any underlying condition.

Customer:

Ive had ecgs too which are always fine. I was thinking it had to be anaemia. but no.

Dr. Thomas, MD :

Then the next step is a holter monitor; as I mentioned above.

Customer:

I cant really ask for another ecg or blood test as he's gonna think Im a hypercondriac.

Dr. Thomas, MD :

Then a holter monitor

Dr. Thomas, MD :

See my list above

Dr. Thomas, MD :

I can not second guess your doctor or take his place

Dr. Thomas, MD :

But you have not had a lot of testing

Dr. Thomas, MD :

Spirometry; ph testing of the esophagus, holter monitor, magnesium levels, etc.

Dr. Thomas, MD :

And if it is anxiety , then you need that addressed.

Customer:

I fully understand, its just that Ive been looking for answers for years and have learnt to live with these symptoms. Im just saying that Ive had ecgs and blood tests to no avail, so was kind of hoping it was something Im lacking in around that time. Thankyou and I will try the magnesium Fiona

Dr. Thomas, MD :
