Resolved Question:

I'm a heavy drinker and got bad pains in my right side and abdomen. I think this may be inflammation of the liver but too embarrassed to go to my doctor. If I stop drinking will my liver heal?

Dr. Phil, MD :

Hi I'm Dr. Phil

Dr. Phil, MD :

Can I ask your first name?

Customer:

Hi Im Gary

Dr. Phil, MD :

Hi Gary

Dr. Phil, MD :

Nice to meet you

Dr. Phil, MD :

what triggers your pain?

Dr. Phil, MD :

eating? drinking? movement?

Customer:

There's no real trigger just a dull ache

Dr. Phil, MD :

okay

Dr. Phil, MD :

how much do you drink and how often?

Customer:

Varies but probably 10 to 12 units a day with one or two days off per week

Dr. Phil, MD :

okay that is a lot. over how long?

Customer:

At that level probably past 2 yes

Dr. Phil, MD :

ok

Customer:

Years

Dr. Phil, MD :

Well that could absolutely be your live

Dr. Phil, MD :

*liver

Dr. Phil, MD :

I recommend that you see a doctor of course

Dr. Phil, MD :

but to answer your question, yes the liver will heal

Dr. Phil, MD :

only 2 years is not very long so your liver should recover

Customer:

How long roughly should I stop drinking for?

Dr. Phil, MD :

can you stop for good?

Customer:

I'm basically trying to establish if I can get better myself or whether I need a bit of help

Dr. Phil, MD :

well, if you can stop completely it sounds likely

Dr. Phil, MD :

based on what you have told me

Dr. Phil, MD :

after that 2 drinks a couple times per week are okay but are you an alcoholic?

Customer:

Would that be your recommendation, stop for good?

Dr. Phil, MD :

alcoholic?

Dr. Phil, MD :

are you an alcoholi?

Customer:

I don't think I'm alcoholic but definitely dependent

Dr. Phil, MD :

okay then the ability to limit your alcohol will be a challenge

Dr. Phil, MD :

I would say stop completely for a while and see what happens

Customer:

Yes, would you say a minimum time period, say 2 weeks, 4 weeks?

Dr. Phil, MD :

at least 3 months

Customer:

3 months sounds tough, and not so sure I could do that without help

Dr. Phil, MD :

You might need help then

Dr. Phil, MD :

ask your doctor Gary

Dr. Phil, MD :

nothing to be embarassed about. we actually respect is greatly when people ask for help

Customer:

I'm just going to have to go to get the courage and speak with my doctor

Dr. Phil, MD :

yes. trust me, he will understand and respect your honesty

Customer:

Ok thanks for the advice

Dr. Phil, MD :

you're welcome Gary

Dr. Phil, MD :

Any more questions for me?

Customer:

Ok thanks again

Dr. Phil, MD :

Gary you still there?

Dr. Phil, MD :

would you mind rating positive before leaving?

Customer:

Yes thanks

Dr. Phil, MD :
