Hello. Im 23 year old female and for about the past 6 months

Customer Question

Hello. Im 23 year old female and for about the past 6 months I've had runny stools that can be quite mucusy and gloopy, they are rarely solid. I go regularly once or twice a day apart from today where I havnt been able to go all day. About 2 weeks ago I woke up from sleep with severe abdominal pains that seems to go up and down my stomach and then would stop for a few seconds and then come back, I also started to feel sick but wasn't. The pain went away after a few hours. Since then my stomach hasn't felt 100% right a bit dodgy is the best way I can describe it. Sometimes I'll get a stabbing pain localised so sometimes in the bottom right or bottom left of my abdomen or in the middle. Last night my stomach started hurting again thought it was hunger pains but started having severe pains exactly he same as what I first described with pains going up and down my stomach and again went away after a few hours. I'm really worried as my grand father died from bowel cancer. Could it be this? I have no blood in stools an the main symptoms are the runny stools (apart from today where I can't go) and stomach pains and occasionally feeling sick??

Dr. David :

This is Dr David

Dr. David :

pain in the lower abdomen tends to be from constipation

Dr. David :

or diverticulosis or colitis

Dr. David :

have you had any constipation?

Dr. David :

colon cancer would be very unlikely at your age

Dr. David :

runny stools would be from a bowel infection

Dr. David :

like a clostridium difficile bowel infection

JACUSTOMER-l3owhlpc- : No never just loose stools. Today is the first day I havnt been able to go
Dr. David :

or possibly colitis or irritable bowel syndrome.

Dr. David :

you should see your GP and get your stools tested for infection.

Dr. David :

and you can try using Imodium to slow down your bowels

Dr. David :

and eating more constipating foods like cheese, rice, bananas,

Dr. David :

to slow your bowels down.

JACUSTOMER-l3owhlpc- : No constipation just loose stools today is the first day I havnt been able to go
Dr. David :

I see.

Dr. David :

food poisoning can cause loose stools

Dr. David :

and viral infections can cause loose stools as well.

Dr. David :

for a short period of time.

Dr. David :

usually these symptoms get better with time and go away.

Dr. David :

if it is just from food poisoning or a viral infection.

JACUSTOMER-l3owhlpc- : I've had loose stools for about 6 months
Dr. David :

I see.

Dr. David :

then it is time to see your GP about it

Dr. David :

and get some stool testing for infection.

Dr. David :

and possibly go on prescription medications or Imodium regularly to slow down your bowels

Dr. David :

you also need to be checked for glutten allergy

Dr. David :

this called celiac spruce disorder

Dr. David :

where patients are allergic to glutten wheat protein

Dr. David :

and can cause loose stool.s

JACUSTOMER-l3owhlpc- : Ok. So you think it's very un likely to be a form of bowel cancer?
Dr. David :

yes, unlikely to be from bowel cancer.

Dr. David :

I am a cancer doctor.

Dr. David :

do you have any other questions?

JACUSTOMER-l3owhlpc- : Ok so you think it's maby an infection or ibs? Or also had swollen glands for about 6 months aswel. Seen doctors lots of times but have been told my glands would be massive if it was cancer. I've had blood tests and a chest x ray about 5 months ago and came back clear
Dr. David :

it could be an infection or IBS.

Dr. David :

cancer would be unlikely at your age and with these symptoms

Dr. David :

much more likely to be bowel allergy like lactose allergy or glutten allergy

Dr. David :

or IBS

JACUSTOMER-l3owhlpc- : Ok. I'm seeing a doctor Thursday but just wanted peice of mind. Thank you
Dr. David :
