Customer Question

Hi, My father has been suffering for a past year. His muscles around his mouth, nose are contracting. He feels that his face is pulling. Slowly it is getting worse. Now he can't watch Tv, read a book..It is very frustrating for him. He stopped sleeping properly during the nights. Doctors have tried to give him botox as a part of the treatment but it didn't work at all. He is on Antidepressants but they don't seem to work either. I just wanted to know if you could help me and tell me what this illness is called and what is the best advise you could give him. He is taking sleeping tablets now. This way he can get at least few hours of sleep durring the night.
Please help
Thank you

I am sorry about your father's condition.

Dr. David :

what medications is he taking?

Dr. David :

he might benefit from medications which can help decrease perioral dystonia or myoclonus

Dr. David :

things like levodopa and carbidopa (Parcopa, Sinemet) could help.

Dr. David :

or a medication like Tetrabenazine (Xenazine), a drug to block dopamine, also may help some people with dystonia around the mouth and nose area.

Dr. David :
