I am frequently passing over ten times a day for over

Customer Question

I am frequently passing urine over ten times a day for over two years. The medication I was put on made my condition worse and I stopped taking the medication. My prostate gland has been checked and appears normal for my age of 68.I have recently had blood tests done and my kidneys test are fine but my blood test for protein is high and my GP tells me,although it is high it is common for my age.
I wake at least five times a night to urinate. Please can you advise.

Hi doctor,

Customer:

Hi doctor

Customer:

just going to look for the name

Dr. Shahzad MD :

ok

Customer:

it is doxycycline caps

Dr. Shahzad MD :

How much water do you drink in a 24 hour period?4

Dr. Shahzad MD :

Do you also feel more thirsty than usual?

Customer:

no,but I forgot to mention that I have dad surgery to my spine from which I have recovered and my surgeon asked me to let them know to contact him if I have problem with my bowel or bladder

Customer:

no

Dr. Shahzad MD :

When did you have this surgery done?

Customer:

I drink around a litre of water per day but I drink about one and a half litres of tea

Dr. Shahzad MD :

You should reduce or stop all kind of caffeinated beverages.

Customer:

surgery was done five years ago

Dr. Shahzad MD :

caffeine is the most likely cause in your case I think.

Customer:

I have recently cut down on drinking tea to half a litre and increase intake of water

Dr. Shahzad MD :

I think that you should restrict water and tea intake total to not more than one liter per 24 hours.

Dr. Shahzad MD :

and you should try not drinking anything before going to sleep.

Dr. Shahzad MD :

There is a group of medications that are commonly used for increased urination which has no known cause which are called as cholinergic drugs.

Customer:

I dont drink coffee at all

Dr. Shahzad MD :

One drug that is commonly used is oxybutynin.

Dr. Shahzad MD :

This will most likely cause your urinary frequency to reduce.

Dr. Shahzad MD :

You should be managed by a urologist.

Customer:

how effective will the drug be for my case

Dr. Shahzad MD :

very effective actually.

Dr. Shahzad MD :

I have been using this drug in my practice for many years.

Dr. Shahzad MD :

with good effect.

Dr. Shahzad MD :

Which is why I think that you should be managed by a specialist if you are not already following up with one.

Customer:

do you think I need furthur tests and see a urologist

Dr. Shahzad MD :

Yes I do.

Dr. Shahzad MD :

Urodynamic studies are most likely required in your case.

Dr. Shahzad MD :

Here is a list of drugs that can be helpful in your case:

Dr. Shahzad MD :

Oxybutynin (Ditropan, Gelnique)
Tolterodine (Detrol)
Darifenacin (Enablex)
