If a small piece of a catheter gets lodged in the bladder,

Customer Question

If a small piece of a catheter gets lodged in the bladder, could this lead to sepsis or other life threatening complications. I read that retained foreign bodies in the bladder can cause sepsis. However this piece of the catheter is very tiny, maybe a bit bigger than a grain of rice and is not sharp.

Dr. Shahzad MD :

Yes it can possibly cause an infection.

Dr. Shahzad MD :

Although sepsis is possible but would be rare.

Hi so would it be extremely rare for sepsis to develop with a foreign body so small. What are the chances of sepsis developing if the foreign body is left in the bladder. Could it stay there forever without problems. Is it life threatening?
Expert:  Dr. SH replied 3 years ago.
Yes it can stay forever without causing problems.
Its rarely, if ever, life threatening.
Chances of sepsis are less than 1 percent.

Hi thank you for your answer .. I rated your answer as excellent. Just one more question, would sepsis still be rare from a foreign body if the person affected had spinal cord injury and had to catheterise frequently using intermittent catheters.
Expert:  Dr. SH replied 3 years ago.
Thank you for the rating and generous bonus. I appreciate that.
With intermittent catheters its uncommon but if the catheter is indwelling for long periods of time then chances are much higher.
