My wife has had for 24 hours her two middle fingers on her

Resolved Question:

My wife has had for 24 hours her two middle fingers on her left hand are numb...... she explains it's like permanent pins and needles, or like when your arm or leg goes to sleep. She has not particularly done anything very different recently other than mixing some viscous liquids as part of a prosthetics course..... she is just a little worried about the numbness being symptomatic of something else . She has just informed me that she's feeling a little dizzy now.....

Dr. P. Jyoti :

ok

Dr. P. Jyoti :

does she have any problems like hypertension?

Customer:

I don't think so

Customer:

she did think in the evening that her heart beat felt strange... but possibly it's just in the mind with the physical problems with her hand

Dr. P. Jyoti :

gsgfssfsfk

Customer:

hello

Dr. P. Jyoti :

hello sorry for that

Dr. P. Jyoti :

just give me a minute as I am also attending a pt here

Dr. P. Jyoti :

just a minute

Dr. P. Jyoti :

hello

Dr. P. Jyoti :

i am back again

Dr. P. Jyoti :

did she have anything like a blackout?

Customer:

I'm talking on the phone with her.... she said that she feels that the heart is beating fast and irratically... she's very scared

Dr. P. Jyoti :

such numbness

Dr. P. Jyoti :

can be due to two causes

Customer:

her two fingers are totally numb

Dr. P. Jyoti :

one is something in the brain like a minor stroke

Customer:

and now her total hand is numb

Dr. P. Jyoti :

the other possibility is a local swelling like a median nerve entrapment

Dr. P. Jyoti :

if her whole hand is numb it is best to show the doctor

Customer:

ok.... should we take urgent action?

Dr. P. Jyoti :

it could be just anxiety

Dr. P. Jyoti :

but she should not take the change

Customer:

ok.... i understand.

Dr. P. Jyoti :

chance

Dr. P. Jyoti :

yes, this is an emergency

Dr. P. Jyoti :

she has to go to the ER now

Dr. P. Jyoti :

it could be a mini-stroke called a TIA

Dr. P. Jyoti :

transient ischemic attack

Dr. P. Jyoti :

with her age i do not think it is likely

Dr. P. Jyoti :

but since she is having numbness of the whole hand this must be ruled out

Dr. P. Jyoti :

ask her to go to the nearest ER

Dr. P. Jyoti :

there she should ask about TIA

Dr. P. Jyoti :

tests like CT or MRI of the brain is needed for this

Dr. P. Jyoti :

she should discuss this with the ER doctor

Dr. P. Jyoti :

overall chances of TIA is very less considering her age and other factors

Dr. P. Jyoti :

but her complaints make it necessary to go to the ER

Dr. P. Jyoti :

ask her to do so and discuss with the doctors like I said

Dr. P. Jyoti :

this will get her more careful examination

Dr. P. Jyoti :

take care

Dr. P. Jyoti :

Hope this shows you the way forward - wish her good health and a quick recovery.
