Hello ENT! My brother has had ringing in his ear (one ear) for 3 days now constantly... Now he feels some pressure. Its causing great stress- what can he do now? Is there an A&E in north London with an ENT? Hes already seen a walkin doctor who saw no signs of infection or trauma. And said he may need to get a scan. Its Thirsday now and doesnt want to wait all weekend- please help! X

Dr. Phil, MD :

Hi I'm Dr. Phil

Dr. Phil, MD :

Can I ask your first name?

Customer: Hello Doctor Phil!
Customer: Ben Fox
Customer: My brothers name is*****
Dr. Phil, MD :

hi Ben and Christopher

Dr. Phil, MD :

do you have allergies Christopher?

Dr. Phil, MD :

like sinus?

Customer: Asthma and some animals
Customer: Sinuses clear and nose.
Dr. Phil, MD :

okay good

Dr. Phil, MD :

what meds does he/you take?

Customer: No meds. Very occasional inhaler. Otherwise in good health!
Dr. Phil, MD :

okay good

Dr. Phil, MD :

clearly this is related to fluid behind the ear

Dr. Phil, MD :

possibly an infection

Dr. Phil, MD :

sometimes oral anti histamines can clear this up

Dr. Phil, MD :

you can get them from the chemist

Dr. Phil, MD :

like loratadine or cetirizine

Dr. Phil, MD :

sometimes antibiotics and steroids are needed

Customer: I saw a walkin doctor today who saw no signs of infection or anything wrong in ear. He had a good inspection. The ringinging has persisted now for 3 days in my left ear
Dr. Phil, MD :

I disagree with that

Dr. Phil, MD :

and sometimes you can't see anything on exam

Dr. Phil, MD :

his history of ear ringing and fullness tell a different story

Customer: My history? Have u access to my records? Im based in London
Dr. Phil, MD :

no I meant the story you told me

Dr. Phil, MD :

history of asthma, ringing, fluid in the ear.

Dr. Phil, MD :

I would get some oral anti histamine and see if that helps

Customer: Ithis can persist like this for days? How do those things corrolate?
Dr. Phil, MD :

because people who have asthma or allergies often build up fluid in the ear/sinuses

Dr. Phil, MD :

yes it can last for days

Customer: I see- We have a hospital up the road. Can this warrant a visit to A&E? And what would be your next step?
Dr. Phil, MD :

Yes, it could

Dr. Phil, MD :

My next step would be to try an anti histamine and sinus rinse for 24 hours

Dr. Phil, MD :

if no better go in

Customer: And what should we say? On arrival to be seen? By the right person
Dr. Phil, MD :

say that he has severe ringing and it is not improving

Dr. Phil, MD :

and you would like to see an ENT

Customer: Thankyou Doctor you have been helpful. I have read other things on the internet that scared us
Dr. Phil, MD :

you're welcome

Dr. Phil, MD :

would you mind rating me positive before leaving?

Customer: Acoustic neonma or something like that?
Dr. Phil, MD :

I doubt it

Dr. Phil, MD :

he would have other symptoms

Customer: Of course I will - I read about specific to one ear constant ringing can be more serious like a tumor
Dr. Phil, MD :

very rare

Dr. Phil, MD :

don't let the internet scare you!!!

Customer: What symptons? If you dont mind continuing.
Dr. Phil, MD :

dizziness, balance problems, hearing problems, neck pain

Dr. Phil, MD :

hello?

Dr. Phil, MD :

are you there?

Customer: Sorry
Dr. Phil, MD :

no problem

Customer: Just speaking with my brother asking him about other symptons - he has had in the recent past, odd pain in head not headache and a slurring sound in left ear before bed (being more noticeable at night)
Dr. Phil, MD :

that is likely related to the ear

Dr. Phil, MD :

if it doesn't get better he should have a CAT scan of the head but not now

Dr. Phil, MD :

it's only been 3 days.

Dr. Phil, MD :

lets not go looking for anything so quick

Customer: That slurring sound now becoming the ringing...Could this be allergy build up you mentioned?
Dr. Phil, MD :

yes absolutely

Customer: Ok thats interesting
Customer: We'll pop up there after dinner. Thankyou for your help today :)
Dr. Phil, MD :

you're welcome :)

Dr. Phil, MD :

would you mind rating me positive before leaving?

Dr. Phil, MD :

I greatly appreciate it

Customer: Yes I will. Is there anything I can tell him to put him at ease. A summing up perhaps?
Dr. Phil, MD :

that I'm nearly 100% sure its not a tumor.

Dr. Phil, MD :

99.9% sure its inner ear related

Dr. Phil, MD :

and that it will get better

Dr. Phil, MD :

just give it time

Customer: Thanks again
Dr. Phil, MD :

welcome

Dr. Phil, MD :

please don't forget that rating! I appreciate it!

Customer: All the best :)
Dr. Phil, MD :

thanks
