Customer Question

My husband suffered a major brain bleed 10 months ago. He cannot move his right leg or arm. There is occasional right hand movement but he can't use it. Are we wasting our time giving him physiotherapy. The doctors have more or less given up hope. My husband is only 50. I can't give up. Many thanks. Karen

Dr. David :

This is Dr. David

Dr. David :

I am sorry your husband had such a bad stroke.

Dr. David :

it sounds like the severe brain bleed injured a good deal of his brain and caused hemiparalysis of half of his body.

Dr. David :

you are not wasting time with physical therapy.

Dr. David :

you should continue with physical therapy for him

Dr. David :

some patients can take years and years for their to be slow and study improvement.

Dr. David :

the brain and nerves can heal but they often can be very very slow to heal

Dr. David :

he has to be willing to push through physical therapy as well which can be very frustrating for him as well.

Customer:

We are also considering hyperbaric oxygen treatment. We were told that this can help to heal the brain. Do you know anything about this treatment?

Dr. David :

hyperbaric oxygen therapy pushes oxygen into dead tissue usually to help with wound healing

Dr. David :

it is still untested and unprove in the brain.

Dr. David :

but there is a chance it could help.

Dr. David :

for wound healing the idea is that high oxygen concentration and pressure can push new blood vessels into wounds which are not healing.

Dr. David :

whether this helps in the brain is unknown.

Dr. David :

best of luck to you and him.
