Resolved Question:

I was just crouching down to wash my son in the bath and the front of my left thigh felt like something snapped, the pain neatly made me faint and be sick, it was about an hour ago and although the pain isn't as bad as it was, I've had ice on it, I still have a throbbing sensation and when I move it, it goes into spasm, should I be going to the hospital?

Dr Basu :

Hi there, This is Dr Basu, Experienced Specialist. I am here to address your concerns and provide great service.

Dr Basu :

Must be very unsettling for you.

Dr Basu :

YOu likely strained the muscle fibers during the incident.

Dr Basu :

Sudden crouching can cause snapping of the muscle fibers.

Dr Basu :

Injury to the blood vessels is unlikely as it will cause lot of bruises and swelling immediately.

Dr Basu :

If you do not have these symptoms bruising and lot of swelling then you do not need to worry.

Dr Basu :

However, you still need to rest your thigh well for next few days.

Dr Basu :

YOu use a thigh support or a crepe bandage to support the thigh.

Dr Basu :

YOu should continue with icing 10 to 15 minutes at a time 4 to 5 times day.

Dr Basu :

YOu can take Ibuprofen 400 to 600 mg with food every 6 hours for pain control.

Dr Basu :

The symptoms will gradually improve.

Dr Basu :

YOu can see your GP in regular hours, if you do not notice any other symptoms.

Dr Basu :

Best wishes,

Dr Basu :

It was my pleasure to help you today.

Customer: Why does it spasm?
Dr Basu :

The spasm is due to the sudden stretching of the muscle.

Dr Basu :

This is a normal reaction to the sudden demand on the muscle to work.

Customer: My foot feels funny,
Dr Basu :

do you feel any weakness or numbness?

Customer: I have to go to my business tomorrow, but right now am struggling to walk, a little numbness
Dr Basu :

Ok

Dr Basu :

YOu also likely hurt the nerve passing through your leg to the foot.

Dr Basu :

This will cause numbness and radiating pain also

Dr Basu :

The treatment is still adequate rest, and analgesics along with icing.

Dr Basu :

However, you can go to the local hospital for further evaluation.

Dr Basu :

They may also give you crutches to help you not to use the leg for a day at least.

Customer: If I rang the hospital, do you think in your opinion they would see me?
Dr Basu :

Yes they may --but still so far it is not urgent in my opinion.

Dr Basu :

little bit of numbness is expected after this type of injury.

Customer: Thanks I'll wait till the morning and see how it is
Dr Basu :

that should be appropriate.

Dr Basu :

Please get some ibuprofen.
