Hi there. Thank you for your question. I will be helping you out with your queries
Breathing problem during a panic attack is called as 'psychological hyperventilation'.
This can be helped by breathing into a paper bag.
But this is not recommended nowadays.
what kind of beta blocker are you on? propranolol?
I think that the dose is okay.
Are you on any other medications for you anxiety?
I think that you should be on escitalopram or citalopram for your anxiety.
You should also be given something like lorazepam or alprazolam to help with symptoms instantly.
Propanolol should work instantly actually.
You can up the dose to 80 mg two to three times daily.
It depends on the control of your symptoms and your heart rate.
You have to keep your heart rate above 60 and your blood pressure normal when you are on propranolol.
What is your pulse rate now?
That is okay then.
The alprazolam and lorazepam are benzodiazepines that work instantly.
But they can cause drowziness and sleepiness which is something that you should be aware of.
They can be used along side the beta blockers.
You cannot compare the two actually.
Beta blockers only slow the heart rate.
The benzodiazepines calm you down overall.
Are you following me?
It takes around 30 minutes for the effects of benzodiazepines to kick in.
yes it will
You also need to be on regular medications like escitalopram everyday.
This medication will help reduce or eliminate your panic attacks.
This particular medication i.e. escitalopram usually takes two to four weeks to start working.
But medications like lorazepam start working instantly in about 30-45 minutes.
