my wife is having [neuralgia type] pains in her head/neck which are most uncomfortable /painful indeed - can you suggest self treatment e.g anti - inflammatory nuerofen ?

Neuralgia type can be caused by the arthritis in the cervical spine causing pinched nerves.

Dr Basu :

Severe headaches can also be caused by the high blood pressure and stroke.

This should be borne in mind.

Clinical evaluation should be cobnsidered for resistant headaches.

Dr Basu :

Ibuprofen is over the counter and stronger than paracetamol.

Dr Basu :

Ibuprofen dose is 400 to 600 mg 3 times a day with food.

Also natural supplements: vitamin B12 1000 mcg daily, B6 50 mg daily, Alpha lipoic acid 600 mg daily; Ginko biloba 400 mg daily may be helpful.

Please also consider physical therapy of the neck and spine which should help with the neural gia related pain.

Prescription medications like, Gabapentin, Nortriptyline or Duloxetine should benefit a lot as well.
