Resolved Question:

Hello there,
I am quite concerned for my mother who is having trouble with muscle spasm in her right arm, this started at the forearm but now reached her shoulder.
She was one struck by lightning but suffered NO immediate injuries or effects at the time which was about 3-4 year ago.
do you know what this could be?

Hello
I am Doctor Thomas, a double board certified doctor in internal medicine and integrative medicine, with advanced training in several other fields. I am a clinician of over 20 years experience. I will give you an initial answer or ask you a question, but be sure to use reply to expert to communicate with me as needed.
Spasms in one arm can be for many reasons.
One possibility is a structural problem, such as a disc problem in the neck, putting pressure on the nerves.
Another reason could be the beginning of a muscle disease.
Mini stroke could do it.
Other neurological problems could present like this, MS, Parkinsons, etc.
Electrolyte imblances, low magnesium, abnormal calcium levels and so on.
Thyroid disease.
Other problems more rare.
So, Your mother needs to see her internal medicine doctor.
If this is a brand new symptom, she should go to the ER.
OK, so that is an initial answer….

Thank you for a reply,

I've looked at the symptoms of the more serious problems and she has no symptoms that match other than the twitching, we are all worried about this and really need to find an answer, can you give any more advice?

Thanks

Expert:  DrRussMD replied 2 years ago.
The twitching can be harmless, this is called benign fasiculations.
It can be the early symptom for any of the causes that I have mentioned.
If you are concerned, then an exam and testing is needed.
You are not going to figure out an exact cause over the internet, as hands on examination is most critical
Testing for all routine labs, thyroid values, electrolytes...these are also needed.

Thank you Dr. Thomas,

Sorry , I'm just concerned for her.

She is seeing someone but its one delay after another, we just want to find the answer.

The twitching causes muscle tiredness meaning her arm is also weaker than normal meaning she can't do the everyday things she used too.

That is more concerning.
One test that might be needed is called an EMG, which will show if there is muscle disease, or a compressed nerve in the cervical spine [the neck].
Weakness is truly a concern, and if you can not get prompt care I recommend at least starting in urgent care or the ER.

ok then, yes, its just been a week and a 1/2 as the doc gone on holiday.

They mentioned inflamed nerves?

Does this mean something to you?

Expert:  DrRussMD replied 2 years ago.
Yes it does.
As I have explained, this can be from a pinched nerve in the neck.
this and the other conditions I have mentioned, can inflame muscle or nerve.
Weakness in the arm implies advancement of the condition.
So, again, she need more immediate attention, a small stroke could have causes this as well.
If you can't get care, I again suggest you start in the emergency room.
