Resolved Question:

I have been diagnosed with cidp but have a strong feeling my condition may have been caused by my strict vegetarian diet. I have had a blood test for b12 which was ok which I find surprising. I adjusted my diet to include eggs and fish about 6 weeks before the blood test. My neurologist refuses to consider the possibility, but I have a strong feeling that I may be right. Do you think this is a possibility and if so where do I go from here?

Dr Basu :

Hi there, This is Dr Basu, Experienced Specialist. I am here to address your concerns and provide great service.

Dr Basu :

Indeed you may be right.

Dr Basu :

Vitamin b12 level may not provide accurate diagnosis of B12 deficiency.

Dr Basu :

A better test to check for B12 deficiency is called Methyl Malonic Acid level in the blood.

Dr Basu :

This test will be elevated in vitamin B12 deficiency.

Dr Basu :

Other B vitamins like B1 ( thiamine), B6 ( pyridoxine), B3 ( niacin) deficiencies are also possible.

Dr Basu :

So they should be checked as well.

Dr Basu :

Folate deficiency also should be checked with homocysteine level.

Dr Basu :

Thyroid disorder, diabetes are other possibilites.

Dr Basu :

Best wishes,

Dr Basu :

It was my pleasure to help you today.
