Hi there. Thank you for your question. I will be helping you out with your queries
Greasy stool are in fact a sign of malabsorption.
With weight loss and greasy stool he should visit the doctor ASAP to rule out malabsorption and possibly cancer as well if required.
Welcome!! Let me know if you have more questions.
Please could you tell me a little about malabsorption
Malabsorption is when nutrients are not absorbed properly.
For instance reduced absorption of fat leads to greasy stools.
The most common cause is celiac disease that can happen in adults and children as well.
But these patients will usually have associated diarrhea as well.
Thank you. How can that be diagnosed? My husband does have diarrhea as well, but mainly in the morning
That is diagnosed by blood tests to have a look at various things like hemoglobin, albumin, PT, APTT, iron, and antibody tests like anti-TTG antibody along with other antibodies.
For a definitive diagnosis an upper GI endoscopy will be required.
They will do a biopsy of small intestine when doing an upper GI endoscopy and send it to the histopathologist who will have a look at it under the microscope.
Are you with me?
Yes, thank you I shall show my husband your answers and hopefully (you know men can take some time to consider going to their doctors?) he will agree to visit his GP so that he can get checked out
