My neighbour shouts abuse and swears at us whenever he can.

Customer Question

My neighbour shouts abuse and swears at us whenever he can. He also stares up at our house and outstares my husband. He displays what seems to be obsessive behaviour - burns his rubbish every week, cuts his grass every week and has painted the outside of his house 3 times this year. He shouts and swears at next door's dog, even growling at him once and then blames my husband. He tells lies to us around the neighbourhood and we are seen as the "bad people." I am frightened that he might attack my husband one day, and I'm wondering whether we should move house. Am I over-reacting or does he sound as though he has some form of mental disorder?

Dr. David :

This is Dr. David

Dr. David :

yes, he sounds like he could have a possible mental or psychiatric disorder.

Dr. David :

he is too young at age 42 to have been in the war to have post traumatic stress disorder.

Dr. David :

bad neighbors need tall fences.

Dr. David :

it sounds like it is hard to stay away from him.

Dr. David :

is there a neighborhood association or group association there ?

Dr. David :

I'm sure not all of the neighbors think you are the bad guys

Dr. David :

hello?

Customer:

Hello, I'm worried about what kind of mental disorder he could have and whether he could be a danger to us. Not sure if his behaviour would be considered normal by some or whether he is unbalanced in some way. He is martial arts trained and always angry with us but I don't know why.

Dr. David :

I don't know why either.

Dr. David :

he could have a type of personality disorder

Dr. David :

or range from steroid medications

Dr. David :

he could have schizophrenia.

Dr. David :

it is hard to say from just your description.

Dr. David :

if he does try to hurt someone, then you can call the police and make a report and there would be a documentation of his violence.

Customer:

I wondered about schizophrenia because of his anger and seemingly obsessive behaviour. Our families used to be very, very close but he suddenly became angry and nasty. It is difficult I know, and perhaps I shouldn't be so worried. Just wait to see what he does.

Dr. David :

you might have to just wait and see.

Dr. David :

I hope he gets the help he needs.

Dr. David :

if you know his relatives, you can try to talk to them to see if he needs to get help.

Dr. David :

best of luck to you and your family
