If you have not had an MRI you should have one and determine the severity of disc disease that is causing sciatica and whether surgery will eventually be required or not.
A pain medicine specialist applying a block to the nerve would also be a very good option. Therefore I would recommend that you should be referred to a pain medicine specialist.
In addition to regular pain medications nerve pain medications like duloxetine, pregabalin or gabapentin may help with your pain, so you can discuss theses with your doctor as well.
