I have a 7 year old son whose behaviour over the last 2 years

Resolved Question:

I have a 7 year old son whose behaviour over the last 2 years has become more and more challenging. He is often sad and uninterested in everything and seems to find no enjoyment in anything. Other times he gets so very angry, wanting everything to be perfect. I spent one hour the other day with him screaming over how his hair was not right. He said he knows he gets angry but doesn't know why he feels that way. I think it is time to speak to a doctor or how do I get referred to a child psychologist? Thank you for any help or guidance you can offer.

Dr. David :

This is Dr. David

Dr. David :

yes, I agree it is time for him to see a child psychologist

Dr. David :

he might be displaying symptoms of depression

Dr. David :

he might have to go on a low dose antidepressant to help his symptoms.

Dr. David :

his symptoms of being sad and uninterested in anything and not seeming to find enjoyment in anything sounds like depression.

Dr. David :

medications like zoloft can be used in children to help fight childhood depression.

Customer:

Would this also explain the anger and the need for everything being perfect and worrying about failing at anything?

Dr. David :

yes, that could explain his behavior.

Customer:

I had a brief conversation with the GP and he said to contact MIND - or should I investigate using a counsellor specialising in child behaviour?

Dr. David :

you can start with MIND

Dr. David :

but he will eventually need to see a child psychologist or child psychiatrist who can prescribe medication for him to help

Customer:

would this be through a GP referral to the hospital?

Dr. David :

yes, the GP doctor can refer you to a child psychologist.

Dr. David :

best of luck to you
