I have a sudden onset of pain in my feet, knees and lower legs

Resolved Question:

I have a sudden onset of pain in my feet, knees and lower legs which is acute first thing in the morning and feels as if my legs and feet have been filled with concrete. After about 10 minutes moving about (with difficulty) this diminishes but I am left with a dull ache and stiffness in knees and feet. I am wondering whether this is polymyalgia rheumatic? Several of my friends, and my sister, have suffered from this on reaching 70 and I have just had my 70th birthday! Up until now I have not had any medical problems so this seems like bad news.
I would appreciate your comments
with thanks

Dr. Shahzad MD :

Hi there. Thank you for your question. I will be helping you out with your queries

Dr. Shahzad MD :

Welcome!!

Dr. Shahzad MD :

Is there any swelling of the joints?

Dr. Shahzad MD :

For how long does the pain and morning stiffness last?

Dr. Shahzad MD :

Are the joints of your hands also involved?

Dr. Shahzad MD :

Do you have pain in any other parts of the body?

Dr. Shahzad MD :

Please let me know.

Customer:

No swelling - stiffness lasts all day and increases if I've been sitting down

Dr. Shahzad MD :

Are joint movements painful especially in the morning?

Customer:

Yes

Dr. Shahzad MD :

The first thing that comes to mind with the symptoms that you are having is arthritis.

Dr. Shahzad MD :

Polymyalgia is a less likely possibility.

Dr. Shahzad MD :

The reason why I say that is because polymyalgia affects the proximal muscle groups i.e. the arms and the hips more than the distal parts.

Dr. Shahzad MD :

However, I would like that you should be seen and investigated further to get to the bottom of this.

Dr. Shahzad MD :

You should book an appointment with your GP ASAP.

Customer:

Ok, thanks
