Hi Doctor I have had the inguinal hernia for quite some time,.

Customer Question

Hi Doctor
I have had the inguinal hernia for quite some time,. It has not changed at all in size. It is very minimal.
All I want now, is for you to reassure me that I don't need to keep checking myself every time I cough or sneeze. It's insecurity I know, but I don't want it to become any more obsessive /compulsive. I need to stop it. Its anxiety provoking.
I know that if it gets larger I need to see my doctor again. Thanks

Hello
In fact the standard of medical care is to watch and wait.
If it is causing you this much anxiety, however, you should have it fixed.
It is easier to fix when it is small.
I would simply check it once daily, not whenever you cough or sneeze.
It is not going to get huge over night.
OK, so that is an initial answer….
Please use reply to expert if you have further questions. When you are ready, please click a positive rating [hopefully excellent]. If you forgot something, come back. I am here daily.

One last question if I may
Can I just watch and wait without the daily ritual of lying down and pressing my groin with my hand. can i just do a visual check, to determine if any changes have occurred?
That would be a relief for me.
Thanks

I submitted one last question, but did not receive a reply as yet.
The question was: Can I just watch and wait without the daily ritual of lying down and pressing in my groin with my hand. Can I just do a visual check, to monitor if any changes have occurred?
That would be a relief for me
Thanks

Yes you can watch and wait.
I don't think you need to check it unless you feel a change, and as long as your own doctor who has examined you approves this approach.
