I am 42. I have had 3 vents inserted in my ears, one each

Resolved Question:

I am 42. I have had 3 vents inserted in my ears, one each decade, last vent being in 1998/1999. I took a really bad head cold over 2 years ago and nearly went deaf in both ears. My right ear only recovered a little bit. My left ear does not have 100% hearing but is alright. This year it was discovered the vent in right ear was still in place. The ENT specialist took it out. But there is no change in my hearing. The specialist has suggested i get the perforated eardrum filled in. To have this done my ear must remain dry. Each time i go to ENT there seems to be an infection in my ear, it seems to be wet. I am being really careful, I insert piece of cottonwool into my war and smear lots of vasaline over it, I also wash my hair over side of the bath. Any advice please?

This is Dr. David

Dr. David :

you might need to go on allergy medications and sudofed and steroid nasal sprays to help dry up your sinuses

Dr. David :

to prevent fluid in your ear.

Customer:

Approx. 9 months ago I was previously taking one tablet a day, loratadine and then 6 months ago taking drops in the ear, flumetasone & clioquinol. It was mentioned to me that the covering of perforated eardrum will only be 60% successful if the ear is not fully dried up....help me please I am geting so frustrated with this, I cannot hear my husband or my small children 5 and 3 properly and its not fair asking them to constantly repeat.

Dr. David :

I would try to dry your ear drums and try to get that ear drum sealed.

Dr. David :

you might then need hearing tests and then hearing aids to help you hear.

Customer:

Have you any advice on else I can get my ear drum dried? I get a hearing test every couple of months and no change. When I asked my specialist for a hearing aid he said my hearing is not bad enough for a hearing aid, when I disagreed he suggested the covering of ear drum.

Dr. David :

alcohol ear drops can often cause drying of the inner ear.

Dr. David :

you can talk to your doctor about alcohol ear drops to help dry your ear canal.

Customer:

would you agree covering of the ear drum would not be successful unless ear drum is fully dry? can i ask my pharmacist for alcohol drops or does this have to be prescribed by the ENT specialist?

Dr. David :

yes, the ear drum has to be dry for it to be sealed.

Dr. David :

you can ask your pharmacist for the alcohol drops and see if they have it

Dr. David :

swimmers often will use alcohol drops to get rid of swimmers ear

Dr. David :

but you should clear it with your doctor first before using them

Dr. David :

because you have a hole in your ear drum.

Dr. David :

good luck

Customer:

Thank you Dr. David, one last question......it was suggested to me by a colleague to purchase online ear cap to put over ear to fully prevent any droplets of water getting into the ear when eashing hair. Do you know if this would be of any help and as you aware of any website that I could maybe purchase this? Thanks again and I'll certainly reply with feedback.

Dr. David :
