Since last week, I started to feel sour taste in my mouth,

Customer Question

Since last week, I started to feel sour taste in my mouth, specifically the back of my tongue. It's been 7th day now, the sour taste is getting stronger, now almost my whole mouth taste sour. Although I have indigestion symptoms, I don't really think the sour taste is caused by indigestion because this is the very first time i feel such sour taste in my mouth continuously 24/7. When I brush my teeth, I feel even sour/salty near the back of my tongue. I have two wisdom teeth which are half exposed and half covered by gums. I wonder if this is caused by bacteria infection?

Dr. David :

This is Dr. David

Dr. David :

you could have a bad dental gingivitis bacterial infection causing the sour taste in your mouth

Dr. David :

or you could be having worse stomach acid reflux up your esophagus coming up into your mouth.

Dr. David :

you need to control your acid reflux with acid blockers like zantac and prilosec and malox and mylanta and nexium to see if that helps

Dr. David :

and you need to get your teeth checked by a dentist to see if you have an infection.

Dr. David :

do you have a dentist you can see right away?

JACUSTOMER-3jjp47g2- :

I just went to the GP today, but he told me it could be acid reflux, but i don't know how an acid reflux would act like? Do I feel anything in my throat other than tasting sour in my mouth?

Dr. David :

that could be the only sign of acid reflux.

JACUSTOMER-3jjp47g2- :

I am an international student in the UK, I need some time to find dentist

Dr. David :

did your GP talk to you about medications to decrease stomach acid?

Dr. David :

like zantac or prilosec?

Dr. David :

also you have to avoid alcohol and sodas and tomato sauce and spicy foods to help calm down acid reflux.

JACUSTOMER-3jjp47g2- :

the GP told me to get 28 omeprazole 20mg gastro-resistant capsules, i bought from pharmacy and i had one capsule for today.

JACUSTOMER-3jjp47g2- :

Out of the four items you told me to avoid, i think i ate most spicy food, i dont drink alcohol, soda and i dont consume tomato or tomato sauce. I will cut down my spicy food intake.

Dr. David :

yes, that will help decrease the stomach acid.

Dr. David :

avoid large meals as well

Dr. David :

and avoid eating too close to bed time.

Dr. David :

use the omeprazole 30-60 minutes before meals daily.

Dr. David :

this should help

Dr. David :

and do find a dentist.

Dr. David :

let me know if you have other questions.

JACUSTOMER-3jjp47g2- :

Teeth infection does not necessarily mean i will feel pain on my teeth/gum right?

JACUSTOMER-3jjp47g2- :

Okay

Dr. David :

usually dental infections do cause a lot of pain.

JACUSTOMER-3jjp47g2- :

But i don't feel pain on any of my teeth

JACUSTOMER-3jjp47g2- :

I will get a dentist though

Dr. David :

then dental infections are less likely

Dr. David :

let me know if you have other questions.

JACUSTOMER-3jjp47g2- :

may i know how many days should i observe after taking the capsules, before i go to the dentist?

Dr. David :

I bet your sour taste in your mouth will get better in 1-2 weeks

Dr. David :

if you continue your omeprazole

Dr. David :

and continue to avoid spicy foods

JACUSTOMER-3jjp47g2- :

wow thats long :(

JACUSTOMER-3jjp47g2- :

acid reflux doesn't mean heartburn right?

Dr. David :

some people can have acid reflux and not have heart burn.

Dr. David :

heart burn is pain in your chest from stomach acid burning your esophagus.

JACUSTOMER-3jjp47g2- :

Okay thank you. Probably just one/two last questions.

JACUSTOMER-3jjp47g2- :

Other than the both possible causes, are there anything else that could cause constant sour taste in mouth?

Dr. David :

those are the two most common causes.

Dr. David :

I would not stress about other causes at this point.

Dr. David :

your GP thinks you have acid reflux as well and didn't think you have something else.

JACUSTOMER-3jjp47g2- :

Okay, you're right, i shouldn't be too pessimistic about it

JACUSTOMER-3jjp47g2- :

Thank you :)

Dr. David :

you are welcome

Hi Dr David,

Can i just ask another question? Sometimes when I burp, i feel sour and "spicy" taste back at my throat, but that was only temporary, the sour taste didn't stay long like how it does now. Does that mean this time around my acid reflux could be more serious than the usual acid reflux, which causing the sour taste to constantly stay in my mouth?

Expert:  Dr. David replied 2 years ago.
yes, it sounds like your acid reflux is worse now than before when acid was just coming up when you burp

you could be having acid coming up more frequently now.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.

Even though now I didn't burp and I don't feel anything in my throat, it could cause constant sour taste on my tongue?

Expert:  Dr. David replied 2 years ago.
yes, acid reflux can do this

it doesn't take very much stomach acid to cause a sour taste in your mouth.
